Christmas Markets
There is nothing more magical during the festive season than a visit to a one of Europe’s Christmas markets. From Brussels and Bruges in Belgium, to Strasbourg in France, and Cologne in Germany, the common themes are beautiful hand made decorations, traditional local crafts, and delicious native foodstuffs. Stay for a couple of nights or just visit for the day. The choice is yours!
Brussels
The Belgian capital stages its famous annual Christmas market in the streets leading from the elegant Grand Place to the former Fish market. The many large and colourful stalls are comple-mented by jugglers, musicians, painters and comedians, not to mention a large ice skating rink.

Bruges
This fine medieval city, with its cobbled plazas and tree-lined canals, is home to possibly the most famous Christmas market of them all. The two main settings are the large Market Square, and the Stevenplein Square, both of which offer a welter of handicrafts and local delicacies, as well as an ice rink and other events to keep the students entertained.

Cologne
Germany’s biggest and best Christmas markets are held in the historic city of Cologne; these include those at the Alter Markt in Cologne’s picturesque Old Town, the Am Dom by the city’s enormous cathedral and, more uniquely, one held on a ship moored by the Rhine promenade, and a medieval market at the Chocolate Museum.

Lille
Hop straight off the Eurostar and into another of France’s delightful Christmas markets. Scattered all around Lille’s atmospheric Place Rihour are dozens of stalls selling originally crafted products, local produce and sweets, while there are a number of concerts and exhibitions to keep everybody amused.

Strasbourg
Strasbourg has held a Christmas market since 1570, making it one of the oldest in Europe. It is, in fact, several markets held in different squares all over town, though those with a sweet tooth should head for the Place de Bare, renowned for its cakes and biscuits! There’s also a giant Ferris Wheel and special boat trips are also available.
